ShadowProtect 8.0 and ImageManager 8.1
1. Setup & Compatibility
What Windows Server versions are supported for ShadowProtect host-based backup?
Host-based backup requires Windows Server 2016 or above on the Hyper-V host. Desktop, client, and Pro editions are not supported.
Agent-based backup continues to support a broader range of Windows versions — refer to the ShadowProtect release notes for the full compatibility matrix.
Can ShadowProtect host-based backup and agent-based backup run on the same machine?
No. Host-based and agent-based backup are mutually exclusive installation modes in ShadowProtect 8.0. A machine can run either the host agent or the agent based, not both. The ShadowProtect 8.0 installer only allows upgrading to the same mode that was previously installed.
Does the ShadowProtect 8.0 installer always show both host-based and agent-based as installation options?
No. The host-based installation mode only appears when the Hyper-V hypervisor is enabled or detected on the Windows Server. If Hyper-V is not detected, the installer will only present the agent-based option.
Can an MSP switch from ShadowProtect agent-based to host-based backup? What happens to existing backup chains?
Yes, an MSP can switch from agent-based to host-based backup in ShadowProtect, but it requires a clean reinstall rather than an in-place upgrade. The process is:

Uninstall the existing agent-based ShadowProtect installation

Reinstall ShadowProtect 8.0 and select Host-Based during installation (Hyper-V role must be enabled on the machine)
Existing agent-based backup chains remain fully restorable after migration. Backup files are not removed during the uninstall process and remain available for recovery operations. Restores can still be performed after switching to host-based protection. Any new backups created after the migration will be executed as host-based jobs.
What is the upgrade path from ShadowProtect 7.5.18 to ShadowProtect 8.0?
To upgrade from ShadowProtect 7.5.18 to ShadowProtect 8.0 there are two paths:

Continuing with agent-based backup: an in-place upgrade from ShadowProtect 7.5.18 is supported without uninstalling first.

Deploying host-based backup: you must uninstall ShadowProtect 7.5.18 first. ShadowProtect 7.5.18 was an agent-based-only installation. If you attempt to install host-based backup without uninstalling, the installer will only show the agent-based upgrade option.
2. Backup Behavior
What file formats do ShadowProtect host-based and agent-based backups use?
Both host-based and agent-based backups use the same. spf and .spi formats. Existing MSP workflows, storage destinations, and ImageManager jobs built around these formats work consistently across both backup models.
How are ShadowProtect host-based backups organized by default?
All host-based backups are placed in a single folder by default. To separate backups by VM — for example, one folder per VM — multiple backup jobs must be created while creating a destination folder for each VM.
Do ShadowProtect host-based backups work with VirtualBoot?
No. Host-based backups are not currently compatible with VirtualBoot. VirtualBoot remains fully supported for agent-based backups. If VirtualBoot is required for a specific workload, use agent-based backup for that machine.
Has anything changed with pushing agent upgrades in ShadowProtect 8.0?
No. The process for pushing agent upgrades to machine agents remains unchanged in ShadowProtect 8.0.
3. Recovery
How do you recover an entire virtual machine from a ShadowProtect host-based backup?
Restore the backup to a .vhd or .vhdx file using the ShadowProtect recovery wizard, then create a new VM in Hyper-V Manager using the recovered virtual disk. The restored .vhdx can be attached directly to a new or existing Hyper-V VM for immediate use.
How do you recover a file or folder from a ShadowProtect host-based backup?
Granular file and folder recovery is not yet available for host-based backups. To recover a specific file or folder, the entire backup must first be restored to a .vhd or .vhdx file, after which the needed files or folders can be accessed from the mounted disk.
Granular recovery is planned for a future release. No confirmed timeline is available at this stage.
4. Monitoring & Management
Do host-based backups report status to Arcserve ShadowControl?
Host-based backup jobs do not currently report status to ShadowControl. MSPs should monitor host-based jobs directly through the ShadowProtect interface for now.
ShadowControl visibility for host-based backup is on the Arcserve product roadmap and under active development.
What does ImageManager 8.1 track?
ImageManager 8.1 tracks the history of verification, consolidation, and retention results for agent-based backups. New in 8.1: improved virtual boot testing results, enhanced OS check disk tracking, a clearer verification results dashboard, and exportable verification history reports for compliance and customer reviews. A new API allows MSPs to feed verification data into existing dashboards, reporting systems, or automation workflows.
Do host-based backups support Advanced Verification in ImageManager 8.1?
No. Advanced Verification in ImageManager 8.1 is not currently supported for host-based (agentless) backups. It continues to be fully supported for agent-based backups.
For host-based backups, ImageManager 8.1 provides backup chain management and replication — but not Advanced Verification.
5. Licensing
How is ShadowProtect host-based backup priced?
ShadowProtect host-based backup is priced the same as agent-based backup.
How do you generate a ShadowProtect host-based license key?
Host-based license keys can be generated through the Arcserve MSP portal. Log in to the portal, navigate to the license management section, and select host-based as the license type. For detailed steps or portal access issues, contact your Arcserve partner account manager or refer to the MSP portal documentation.
How can MSPs generate a tenant trial of ShadowProtect 8.1?
