What Is Backup and Recovery?

Backup and recovery combine the creation of recoverable data copies with the processes used to restore systems, applications, and information when normal access is disrupted by deletion, corruption, cyber incidents, or infrastructure failures.

The two disciplines work together but serve different purposes. Backup captures and retains data, while recovery uses that data to return workloads to an operational state. Modern backup and recovery platforms support physical servers, virtual machines, cloud-native applications, databases, endpoints, Microsoft 365 environments, and other SaaS platforms (Salesforce, Google Workspace, etc.) through automated scheduling, retention management, encryption, replication, and centralized administration.

Recovery capabilities have expanded well beyond file-level restoration. Enterprise solutions may provide instant virtual machine recovery, bare metal recovery, granular application recovery, point-in-time restoration, automated disaster recovery testing, and orchestrated failover between production and recovery environments. These capabilities are intended to reduce the operational complexity associated with large-scale recovery events.

Organizations measure recovery readiness using recovery point objective (RPO) and recovery time objective (RTO). These metrics establish targets for acceptable data loss and service interruption, guiding how backup and recovery technologies are configured and operated.

As ransomware and other cyber threats continue to affect business operations, backup and recovery have become a key component of data resilience and cyber resilience strategies. Capabilities such as immutable backups, isolated recovery environments, AI-enabled anomaly detection, and automated recovery validation help organizations verify recovery readiness and restore services after disruptive events.

Why Backup and Recovery Matter

Backup data delivers little operational value unless it can be restored when needed. An effective backup and recovery process helps organizations recover information, applications, and infrastructure within defined business requirements, reducing the impact of downtime and data loss during planned or unplanned disruptions.
