When the VPN goes down you blame IT. But when they save the computer you spilled coffee on, they’re your heroes. In truth, as the people responsible for keeping virtually everyone productive, we need to appreciate what they do every day. But we don’t. That’s why we’re joining the celebration of System Administrator Appreciation Day on July 31. For those who may not know the title, a system administrator (abbreviated as sysadmin) is the person or IT department that is responsible for the upkeep, configuration, and reliable operation of your organization’s computer systems and servers. When those vital systems go down, your sysadmin’s phone lights up. Always under pressure, always managing through change, always there for you, it’s time to pay homage to their efforts.
The founders of SysAdmin Appreciation Day suggest some appropriate ways to honor these hardworking keepers of your digital flame:
- Cake and ice cream
- Pizza
- Cards
- Gifts
- Words of gratitude
- Custom T-shirts (click for a free t-shirt from Spiceworks for sysadmins only)
- Balloons
- Confetti
