What's New in ShadowProtect 8.0

Host-based backup is a new, Hyper-V-native protection model in ShadowProtect 8.0. Backups can now be managed directly at the Microsoft Hyper-V host level for the first time.  

Host-based ShadowProtect deployment provides:

  • OAuth 2.0 for SMTP: modern, secure authentication for email notifications, so SLA-breach alerts reliably get through.

  • Silent installation: Deploy at scale through RMM or GPO for zero-touch onboarding.

  • Predictable backup sizes: consistent backup size generation across successive runs eliminates unexpected storage growth.

  • Faster job management: search and filter backup jobs by name, status, or VM ID from the redesigned job page.

Choosing the Right Backup Approach for MSP Clients: Host-Based Versus. Agent-Based Protection

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to host-based versus agent-based data protection. The best backup strategy depends on an MSP’s clients’ current Microsoft Hyper-V environments, operational requirements, and how much standardization the MSP wants to achieve across its customer base.

When evaluating backup architectures, MSPs should focus on manageability, scalability, recovery objectives, and long-term service efficiency. Use the following guidance to determine which approach aligns best with each customer’s environment:

  • Adopt host-based when you're managing many VMs across one or more Hyper-V hosts and want a single, centralized point of policy control. This approach minimizes the footprint inside each VM and simplifies day-to-day administration as your Hyper-V fleet grows

  • Continue with agent-based when individual workloads need OS-level visibility or app-aware recovery, the same general-purpose protection it has always provided, for Hyper-V VMs, physical servers, and everything else in your environment

  • Run both side by side where that fits your environment: host-based for standardized Hyper-V fleets where uniform policy matters most, agent-based wherever workload-specific control or app-level recovery is still the priority

  • Good to know host-based licensing is per Hyper-V host (not shared across hosts) and is supported on Windows Server 2016 and above.
